Ian Fairweather Research and Conservation Fund

Introduction

Funds for the research and conservation awards have been received from the estate of long-time BCA member Ian Fairweather. We are very grateful for his generosity and financial support. We are also very appreciative of others who contribute to the fund through the link below or by their membership in the British Cichlid Association. Please be aware that the BCA is not a registered charity, but an organisation dedicated to furthering education in cichlids, whether they are commonly found in the aquarium trade or not.

Final applications for funding must be received by 31 July each year and will be reviewed by the BCA board for their merit in furthering the academic understanding and/or conservation of cichlids.

Applications are welcomed from students and staff at UK universities or other non-profit institutions within the UK, which have research, conservation or education in its mission statement.

The project does not need to be based in the UK however. We also welcome applications from residents of countries/regions in which cichlids are native, but applicants should have a UK sponsor/collaborator at an eligible institution. If you have not yet found a suitable UK partner, we can try to help.

Awards are given annually and will be announced at the yearly AGM in the autumn. These are expected to be in the £500-1500 range, though exceptions can be made.

The initial application can be made online HERE or by filling out and emailing the attached word document. You will be notified if your application has been accepted as suitable for consideration. At that time you should start work on the final application.

The BCA reserves the right to reprint any application accepted for consideration online and/or in the club publication Cichlidae. The recipient of this award will be expected to submit to the BCA an article describing initial setup or progress within 3 months of award. Once the project is completed, a full article recapping the entire duration of the research/project and a detailed description of the results achieved will be submitted to the BCA for publication in Cichlidae or online. Any articles published in periodicals in regards to the above should credit the BCA for the assistance in funding.

Please submit your application online or email to the BCA Chairman at the address supplied on the form.
