Welcome to the home of the British Cichlid Association. The British Cichlid Association (BCA) is an organization dedicated to the study, care, and enjoyment of cichlids, a diverse and fascinating group of fish. For hobbyists and enthusiasts, joining the BCA offers a multitude of benefits that enhance their experience and knowledge of cichlid keeping. Please look through the pages of our site to see how much the BCA has to offer, all included with minimal membership cost. You can access much of the site for free but you must be a Full Member to access our members-only section. A Full Membership is only £6 and provides many valuable benefits, such as our quarterly periodical Cichlidae, an online library of more than100 past publications, Retail discounts and an online sales and trading page.

The small yearly membership dues go to maintaining this site and our yearly events. Details are found on the Full Membership Benefits menu tab and below. Joining the British Cichlid Association is a valuable opportunity for anyone passionate about cichlids. The BCA offers a rich array of resources, a supportive community, and numerous ways to engage with and contribute to the hobby. Whether you are just starting out or are a seasoned cichlid keeper, the BCA provides the tools, knowledge, and connections to enhance your experience and make a positive impact on the world of cichlid keeping. The BCA provides a wealth of resources that cater to both novice and experienced cichlid keepers. Members gain access to:

  • Quarterly Journal: “Cichlidae” features articles on species profiles, breeding tips, care guides, and research updates. Contribute to the conservation and understanding of cichlids by submitting articles, knowing that you are part of a larger effort to secure and protect cichlid species.
  • Educational Materials: Comprehensive care guides, species information, and breeding techniques online.
  • Upcoming Online Webinars: Learn from experts through online sessions on various aspects of cichlid keeping. We are currently looking for a volunteer to run monthly online meetings.

  • Online Meetings: Yearly (and hopefully monthly) events will be moving online to provide opportunities to meet fellow hobbyists, share experiences, and exchange ideas.
  • Future Conventions and Shows: Conventions bring together members from across the country, featuring guest speakers, fish shows, and workshops. One it is established that there is again sufficient support for an autumn convention we’ll hold one. Until then, join us online!
  • Online Forums and Social Media: Engage with the community, ask questions, and share your successes on the BCA’s online platforms.
  • Skill Development: Improve your aquarium management, breeding techniques, and overall knowledge of cichlid biology.
  • Promotion of the Hobby The BCA works to promote and grow the cichlid-keeping hobby, ensuring its vibrancy for future generations.

3. Support for Breeding, Research and Conservation

The BCA actively supports cichlid research, breeding programmes and conservation initiatives.

  • Breeding Support: Join in online conversations with other members and learn from them about their breeding programmes, many aimed at preserving rare and endangered cichlid species.
  • Conservation Efforts: Contribute to or stay informed about funded projects focused on protecting natural cichlid habitats and promoting the understanding of cichlids in the wild.
  • Support Research: A significant part of your membership will go to support cichlid research and/or conservation.
  • Publication Opportunities: Share your own findings and experiences through the association’s journal and other publications.
